Head to Heart

You’re reading something. It’s persuasive. It’s a good idea. It gets stuck in your head.

Imagine yourself like a funnel. It starts at the head and gets narrower the further down you go.

Most things at the top won’t make it to the bottom.

In learning and experiencing, there’s a funnel inside you.

From head to heart.

First, you become conscious of something. It’s in your head.

Then, it becomes easier. Recognition becomes part of your habit. It has moved down a little bit.

Still, you’re not actively doing it. The further down the funnel it moves, the more work it needs.

Practice.

With patience and deliberate practice, it will fall lower and lower, on its way to your heart.

It becomes second nature.

You're starting to incorporate the idea into most thoughts and processes.

Eventually you become one.

The idea has made its way from your head to your heart.

You're united.

Many of the ideas on this Graph can follow the same journey for you.

First they're interesting. Then you become conscious. You start noticing. Until finally, if the idea is good enough, it becomes part of your heart.

Not just ideas go from head to heart.

  • Cities (all the sights, then all the flavour)
  • Jobs (first onboarding, then becoming a member of the team)
  • Partners (first dates, until predicting the other one's behaviour)
  • Friends (interesting times, then someone to rely on)
  • Books (an interesting title, then immersed rereads and study)
  • Sports (learning serves, technique and endurance, until it becomes just mental)

and even life itself (learning the skills, the values, the directions, until you start to find your place on this earth)

Which of your ideas have gone from head to heart?
